Your Guide to Faith Deconstruction

Dr. David Gushee joined the show to discuss why he deconstructed evangelicalism. Listen Here!

Two years ago this month, Melanie Mudge and I sat down to dream about what The Sophia Society could become. We had a choice, ditch Christianity altogether or work to uncover the heart of faith. We chose the latter. We longed to create a safe, sacred space where former evangelicals could process their trauma, find community, shed fundamentalism, and find new spiritual pathways.

Since then, we launched Holy Heretics Podcast, created this Liminal Spaces publication, established a warehouse of articles, released an online course, and published our ebook “Faith Deconstruction 101.” And in so doing, we noticed almost all of us are dealing with the same issues, or at least asking similar questions.

Whether you got here because of purity culture, partisan politics, patriarchy, white supremacy, or spiritual abuse, we hope you’ll find the answers you are searching for. That’s why I wanted to dedicate this issue to elevate some of the most transformative conversations we’ve had over the past couple of years.

Deconstruction is disorienting. It’s often hard to find the language to describe what you are feeling, much less to find a way forward. As you navigate this space in between who you were and who you are becoming, may these topical conversations and resources guide you on the long journey back to God.

As you move further and further into the reconstruction process, what conversations are you just dying to have? Is there an issue we haven't yet discussed? If so, drop me an email and we will do our best to engage that topic intellectually, honestly, and faithfully.

Peace,

Gary Alan
